01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

Set on a quiet corner in Kyoto's Sanjo Inokuma neighbourhood, Rhône fills with the aroma of freshly toasted bread as soon as its doors open at 7:00. Breakfast revolves around an inviting lineup of toasts made with loaves from nearby bakery panscape, starting with simple buttered bread and branching out into savoury options. Highlights include a ham-and-egg toast topped with 3 slices of ham, a soft-yolked fried egg, and a touch of wholegrain mustard, alongside golden tomato and cheese toast, and a curry toast featuring house-made beef curry sauce.

For a sweeter start to the day, options include honey toast with salted butter and Manuka honey, or Nutella toast finished with Maldon rock salt over the hazelnut spread. French toast arrives crisp on the outside and tender within, paired with maple syrup and chilled vanilla ice cream, with a half-portion available for a lighter bite. A simple green salad tossed in a house-made dressing seasoned with shio koji rounds out a balanced morning plate.

Carefully Brewed Coffee and a Signature Pudding

Drink options centre on hand-dripped hot coffee brewed cup by cup using beans roasted by woven in Kyoto's Okazaki area, alongside a classic café au lait that combines strong coffee and milk in a 1:2 ratio. For afternoon tea or an after-meal treat, the signature dessert is a house-made pudding baked continuously since Rhône opened. Scented with vanilla, the nostalgic, firm custard is balanced by a pleasantly bitter caramel sauce, making it equally suited as an accompaniment for coffee or a sweet pairing with wine.

Unwinding with Wine or a Drink

While offering the relaxed comfort of a neighbourhood kissaten, Rhône also pours wines by the glass focusing on France's Rhône valley, alongside owner-selected bottles and beer. Whether dropping in for Napolitan pasta and light fare in the afternoon or lingering over dinner plates and wine on evening service days, guests can settle in at their own pace.
